About THE TURTLE'S DISCOVERY BOOK THE TURTLE'S DISCOVERY BOOK is a cartoon-illustrated family fun book for young people of all ages...anyone who wants to share the fun and excitement of discovering Logo on and off the computer. This is not a book about programming or "computer literacy," whatever the current and politically correct definition is supposed to be these days. It's about "self-literacy." It is a book about young people of all ages using the computer and Logo as tools for self-discovery. Young people from 2 to 102 begin by controlling the actions of a cybernetic turtle. These actions let them "see" how they are thinking. When the sequence of thoughts do not make the turtle do what they want, the descriptive nature of Logo allows them to easily retrace their thoughts, or to pursue a new direction. Multi-dimensional and multi-sensory activities done on and off the computer help young people develop a better insight into how to make things happen in the real world -- the world of three dimensions. Along the way, they get introduced to some powerful ideas, about organizing, analyzing, and manipulating ideas. Take a look at the table of contents. The book starts at an early elementary school level with lots of activities for younger children. As you move through the book, the tone changes to reflect some more advanced exercises for more experienced explorers. The final chapters deal with such things as game design, list processing, two- and three-dimensional design including the development and manipulating 3-D objects in space. While this book is based on the free Logo package, MSW Logo from George Mills, it can be used with other Logo software. Some editing is required. Some commands are not available in other versions but can be written. Some of these "home grown" primitives are included.
