From Germans to America, the Heidelberg arrived in NY, 17 May 1854. The New York Daily Times (microfilm) for May 16 reported: Arrived May 15 Ship Heidelberg of New-Orleans, [captain] Williams, Havre, 32 days mdse and 651 passengers to [agents] W. Tyson. Unfortunately (genealogically) this appears to have been an uneventful passage. The same issue had a report on the sinking of the emigrant ship Favorite from Bremen with the loss of all passengers after a collision in the English Channel. The NYDT for May 15 had a detailed story about the foundering of the emigrant ship Winchester after she had been out of control for sixteen days with storm damage. The 700 passengers were rescued by seven passing ships, the largest number by the US mail steamer Washington, only an hour before she sank.
