Photographed by Frank Hurley, SOUTH is the film record of Sir Ernest Shackleton's 
heroic but ill-starred attempt to cross the Antarctic in 1914-16. His ship Endurance 
became stuck fast in the pack ice for months and was abandoned when the ice crushed 
the vessel. The men were eventually rescued after five crew members sailed across 800 
miles of wild seas in an open boat until they reached South Georgia. Hurley was a superb 
and courageous photographer and it is his work that continues to have such an impact 
upon contemporary audiences. The film has been restored by the National Film and 
Television Archive and has been tinted and toned to match the original prints.

DVD extras include a commentary on the film, additional footage of Shackleton's funeral 
and SOUTHWARD ON THE QUEST, recently discovered footage of the ROSS SEA PARTY with 
commentary by Polar historian Kelly Tyler, an extensive stills gallery, and more. 

Subtitles for the hearing impaired are optional on all commentaries. 
This DVD is playable in all regions but on PAL compatible machines only.
